PATERNOSTER CHARDONNAY

Paternoster Valle Verde, located in Cardinia on the fringe of the Yarra Valley, Victoria is a hidden gem.

The winery produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines that are allocated to one of three brands, Premium, Jack of Hearts or Heaven’s Door. The last two names inspired by Winemaker Phil Hession’s love of Bob Dylan’s music.

I have tasted both the Premium and Jack of Hearts but have yet to sample the extremely rare Heaven’s Door. I suspect Phil keeps all the Heaven’s Door wine for personal medicinal use.

The Jack of Heart’s Chardonnay is a wonderful wine. It makes you ponder if the Heaven’s Door brand can surpass it?

The 2016 Premium may be the “entry level” wine for Paternoster but this is not a basic or simple wine and could challenge many more expensive Australian Chardonnays.

The nose conveys light citrus, brioche and a touch of oak.

On the palate lemon, grapefruit and white peach harmonise beautifully with a little touch of oak and some wet-stone minerality.

The winemaker will only use Francois Freres’ oak barrels from Saint-Romain just west of Beaune for his Chardonnay. (I love Beaune.) ABV (alcohol by volume) 12.8%.

If you are exploring the boutique wineries of the Yarra Valley do seek out Paternoster in Emerald. You may need to phone ahead for a tasting.

A BIJOU DINNER PARTY

We had a few friends for dinner on Saturday evening – an excuse to get the open fire oozing warmth and welcome.

Small dinner parties always present an opportunity to bring out some interesting wines.

The meal consisted of a full eye-fillet marinaded in Port with garlic, rosemary and oregano and served with a homemade green pepper sauce. The steak was cooked on the BBQ and was accompanied by Potato Lyonnaise and roasted vegetables dressed with parmesan cheese and lemon juice.

Dessert was Jamie Oliver’s amazing Winter Bombe. https://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/fruit-recipes/winter-pudding-bombe/

One of the ingredients in the Bombe is Vin Santo, a dessert wine from Tuscany.

The NV Castellani Vino dei Santi was the inspiration for selecting Italian wines with the meal. If Vin Santo is an ingredient in the dessert, then what better wine to accompany the dessert? It worked well. This wine is available at Dan Murphy’s.

With the main course we had a 2017 Barolo from Josetta Saffirio and a 2012 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello.

The Barolo was wonderful and the Super Tuscan (OMG) demonstrated why these wines are held in such esteem.

No tasting notes were taken but the smiles on the faces and the laughter in the room told the entire story.

It’s great when everything comes together perfectly at a dinner party.
Cheers

KEEPING WARM

Melbourne is certainly cooling down as we approach winter.

What better way to fight off the cold than combining a glowing wood fire with a very good Shiraz.

So with my socks warming in front of this glowing fire I decided to sip a Brown Brothers, Wine Maker’s Series, Shiraz, 2019 is a great wine for such an occasion.

Winemaker, Geoff Alexander, has his signature on this Shiraz.

The nose offers black plum and damson.

The palate provides an exciting blend of dark plum, red apple, cedar, rhubarb and a touch of black licorice. Fruit, tannins and alcohol are all in balance and the 14.5% ABV (alcohol by volume) provides a little touch of heat that is very welcome on a cold evening.

This full-bodied Shiraz from Heathcote is a great buy at around $25.

I LOVE THE BARTER SYSTEM

When a friend is looking for firewood on the same day that I received a load of firewood and I had a little more than I expected/needed ………………

The solution – The Barter System.

I was given these two fascinating bottles of wine.

Koerner, The Clare 21 – a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Malbec, Carignan and Sciacarello; and

Josetta Saffirio, Barolo, del Commune di Monforte d’Alba, 2017.

My friend departed with a boot-load of Firewood.

Hopefully we both end up with a warm glow.

TAHBILK – ALWAYS GREAT VALUE

I just picked up these two bad boys for under $20 each.

Tahbilk, which is located less than 2 hours north of Melbourne, Victoria produces a range of very good wines at fabulous prices resulting in wonderful value for money – see results below.

Please don’t mention this astounding value to anyone at Tahbilk, in case they decide to put up their prices. (Note to incoming CEO, Ross Sudano – a price freeze for a few years until you get your feet under the table/barrel would be a great strategy.)

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon provides a full upfront palate of blackberries, red plum and cedar. The tannins are drying and work well with the subtle oak.

The 2018 Shiraz is full bodied with dark plum and black fruit taking the lead against a backdrop of spices, especially clove, and some fine tannin texture.

Each wine scored iS Winescale 7.0 pts Great Quality (www.iswinescale.com) and for the $18.99 I paid, they each achieved VFM 9.5pts. out of a possible 10 pts. (VFM = Value for Money).

A thought for wine educators, these two wines are a very affordable way to introduce students to the differences between Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

GREAT WINES FOR A GREAT CAUSE

Tallarook Wines in Central Victoria produce beautiful wines at amazing prices.

Recently the Tallarook team suffered a tragedy. Max Riebl, husband of Beth Riebl, the Customer Service and Operations Manager at Tallarook, passed away at the age of 30 from brain cancer.

“To support Beth and her family, and with her permission, Tallarook Wines will be donating all profits from online sales from 30 April to 18 May 2022 to Beth’s Biggest Morning Tea. In an effort to help Cancer Council raise much needed funds that go towards vital cancer research, support services, prevention programs, and advocacy.”

This is an opportunity for wine lovers to buy great wines and support a great cause.

Check out Tallarook Wines at https://tallarookwines.com.au/collections/frontpage

We send out deepest sympathy to the Riebl family and the team at Tallarook.
